Having read Highlights magazine when I was a child, I have much fondness for this magazine when it comes to sharing it with my own kids. Highlights has been around for years and is best suited for children ages 6 to 12. Its counterpart, Highlights High Five, is ideal for kids ages 2 to about age 5.
High Five is a wonderful "first" magazine for young kids, and is full of great stories, activities, puzzles, and seasonal bonus pages. It is published monthly, and each edition includes a "Let's Read Together" section (including several short stories with illustrations), a "Let's Puzzle It Out" section (including hidden picture pages, puzzle pages, and more), a "Let's Do It" section (usually including a physical activity, a song, a dance, an art project, or a recipe), as well as bonus pages that reflect seasonal topics.
The magazines are a great way to introduce new stories, topics, activities, and problem-solving puzzles to your developing child. They also include poetry and stories that contain multi-lingual elements. The magazines are well-illustrated and do a great job of getting kids thinking, reading, solving, and enjoying what they are learning. My kids enjoy solving the puzzles on their own, and the stories are great for reading aloud together.
A year's subscription runs about $30 and they arrive monthly. They are a great source for educational activities, and make wonderful gifts ideas.
